Reclaiming Public Space: Women’s Experiences in Urban Landscapes
This final exhibition was the culmination of my painting practice, showcasing a body of work that engages with women's experiences in public spaces. The installation, set both indoors and outdoors, reflected the core of my years-long practice of reappropriating urban spaces by displaying my paintings throughout the city. The works themselves respond to the gendered dimensions of public spaces, examining and reacting to testimonies of sexist harassment in public spaces.
Through this multifaceted exhibition, I sought to challenge the traditional boundaries of art spaces, using both the gallery and the street as essential components of the work, mirroring my artistic journey. The outdoor display echoed my practice of reclaiming public space, turning art into an active participant in urban life.
Among the exhibition's key features was a projection of photographs documenting my paintings displayed across the city. The exhibition also included a performance, La Cabine, featuring a male actor, which interrogated the diminished value often placed on women’s speech compared to men’s. The performance critically reflected on the power dynamics of voice and gender, underscoring how the public reception of women’s voices is often undermined.
By blending these various elements—paintings, projection, and performance—the exhibition sought to challenge and expand the role of art in public discourse, while highlighting the complex relationship between women, speech, and space in urban contexts.
