Fragments
2020 - Ongoing
Acrylic and oil on canvas, Digital collage
London, Belgium
The self-portrait series explores the body as a site of fragmentation, performance, vulnerability, and refusal. Rather than presenting the self as fixed or fully knowable, the works approach self-portraiture as a process of distortion: faces, limbs, gestures, and bodily forms appear unsettled, interrupted, or partially withheld.
Through colour, texture, and expressive figuration, the series questions what it means to look at oneself while also being shaped by external gazes. The body becomes both subject and object: something lived from within, but also watched, interpreted, desired, judged, or made visible by others. The series explores my own relationship to my body and the embodied experience of femininity, approaching the self-portrait as a space where intimacy, discomfort, and self-recognition can coexist. The self-portraits are not only personal images, but reflections on how gendered bodies are constructed through social expectations and visual culture.
The series continues my wider interest in women’s bodies, visibility, and public/private space. It uses self-representation as a way to reclaim the image of the body while resisting clarity, control, or easy recognition.
